"Cultural Heritage Management: Archaeology, architecture and urban planning" (2015)

Summer School in Athens and Kea (Cyclades, Aegean Sea), 8–26 June 2015

Dear colleagues and students, 

In June 2015, under the auspices of the postgraduate program "Cultural Heritage Management: Archaeology, architecture and urban planning", a three-week Summer School under the same name will be organized, bringing three research areas in one project.

The program is open mainly to students who have completed three years of undergraduate studies in compatible research subjects (i.e. archaeology, architecture and cultural technology) but also to people who have relevant knowledge of such topics and wish to acquire a comprehensive experience in archaeology, excavation and computer applications in archaeology, heritage conservation and documentation, conservation and restoration of monuments, cultural economics and cultural property law.

The School comprises daily lectures and workshops. The course includes:

  • fifty four (54) hours of lectures
  • a 20-hour workshop on excavation techniques
  • a 30-hour workshop concerning “themes in archaeology and management”
  • visits to archaeological sites and museums (see below).

The successful completion of the program corresponds to 8 ECTS grades awarded by the University of Athens, the University of Patras and the University of the Aegean.


More specifically, the course curriculum comprises three main themes:

Archaeology and History of Art (18 hours)

  • History of Art and Architecture (with special modules on Greek prehistory, Classical times, Byzantium, Modern Art & Architecture)
  • Archaeological fieldwork techniques and methods
  • Computer applications in archaeology


Architecture-Urban Planning-Restoration (18 hours)

  • Theory of Architecture
  • Urban theory
  • Theory and techniques of restoration


Cultural Management (18 hours)

  • Introduction to cultural heritage management
  • Cultural heritage management, and New Technologies
  • Cultural economics
  • Cultural Heritage and the Law


The first part of the course will take place in Athens and the island of Kea, Cyclades. The workshops will take place in Kea. Educational visits are scheduled to the Acropolis and the Agora, the New Acropolis Museum, the
Museum of the Ancient Agora, the National Archaeological Museum and the Byzantine Museum in Athens. Moreover, excursions will be organized in Sounion, Lavrion, the tower of Ayia Marina on Kea and the island of Kythnos (the excursions are optional and thus not included in the fees).

Course Fee: 700 euros. Travel expenses and accommodation are not included in the fees. A list of selected hostels and hotels will be provided to the participants.
All selected applicants will be notified by March 15, 2015 and will receive a detailed curriculum and the payment details. All lectures and workshops will be delivered in English.
