Zoological Museum

The Zoological Museum of the University of Athens belongs to the Department of Biology. It is housed in the University campus, and has an area of about 2200 square meters.

Its story began 150 years ago, as part of the Physiographic Museum of the University of Athens, in the form of a small collection of stuffed animals. Today it is the oldest and richest zoological museum of Greece.

The Museum's collections include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, marine invertebrates, snails, insects and other invertebrates from Greece and other countries as well as anthropological findings.

The Museum's activities include the preservation of the natural heritage of Greece through the conservation of collections and through the creation of databases and archives, the research on the fauna of Greece, the education of students, the raising of public awareness, particularly of young people, and the provision of advice to individuals, organizations, public services etc.

The Museum is visited every year by approximately 10.000 persons, mostly by children from primary and secondary education.
